The Samburu Special Five
The reserve is especially famous for the "Samburu Special Five", rare northern species not commonly found elsewhere in Kenya: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and gerenuk.
The Ewaso Ng'iro River
The Ewaso Ng'iro River is the reserve's lifeline, attracting elephants, crocodiles, lions, leopards, and numerous birds. Samburu is also regarded as one of Kenya's best places to spot elusive leopards.
Landscape
The scenery includes acacia woodlands, doum palms, rocky hills, and dry grasslands. Sunsets over the semi-desert terrain are especially dramatic.
Samburu Culture
The reserve is home to the Samburu people, close relatives of the Maasai, who maintain strong traditions centered around cattle herding and colorful ceremonial attire. Cultural visits allow tourists to experience traditional dances, customs, and pastoral life.
